Advent, Advent, a little light is burning. Sometimes so strong and radiant that the whole room lights up, just from this one light. And you can do that too. Happiness research calls it „Random Acts of Kindness“. These are small good deeds, often directed to strangers, expecting nothing in return.
Dr. Martin Seligman, also called the founder of Positive Psychology, divided subjects into two groups in a scientific study:
- Group 1 was to do something nice for themselves.
- Group 2 was to do something nice for someone else.
Who was the happier group at the end of the day? That’s right, group 2.
Are you surprised?
In fact, the altruistic group 2 had the happier day. Helping someone, i.e. doing something good, helps others, but above all it helps you too. There are studies that show that people who help can actually feel many times happier. It also makes them feel more optimistic, stronger and more confident.
But why is that?
Friendly actions cause our neurotransmitters to release serotonin, which makes us see the world and ourselves more positively and with different eyes. Happiness researchers say: When we are good to other people, we feel good.
On the trail of happiness
Feel like giving it a try? Then here are a few ideas:
- Hide a nice little message so your loved ones will find it at work or school.
- Design something creative and put it in front of a non-profit organisation.
- Bring someone a little surprise today.
Sometimes you don’t even see the reaction of the happy person. That’s a pity, but just the knowledge and the implementation of this good deed brightens up your day. Promised 🙂
